Volunteer Opportunities
The Mission Ministry Unit (MMU) of Session is responsible for overseeing the benevolent giving of our church and the outreach efforts of our congregation. This is accomplished by providing opportunities for the congregation to give their time, talent and resources to further the church’s mission, locally and throughout the world. The Mission Ministry Unit serves as a clearinghouse for information, opportunities and a funding source for several regular mission projects and conducts special mission offerings such as One Great Hour of Sharing and the Christmas Joy offerings.
Following are some of the mission projects that are actively sponsored and supported by SCPC. Your interest and involvement are welcomed and encouraged. Watch for announcements in the Sunday Bulletin and the PresbyPost.
Christmas in July – Christmas first arrives at SCPC in July. Over the last six years our congregation has supplied items for needy youth, women and families residing in Centre County shelters – items that are used regularly to run the shelters. These gifts of common, ordinary individual and household items have helped the residents as well as the shelters to get through lean times when there is never enough to go around. The requested items are posted and can be purchased and delivered to the local shelters we support: Women’s Resource Center, Stepping Stone, Stormbreak, Burrowes St. Youth Haven, Centre House and Zerby Gap Youth Service Bureau. This is a chance to remember those less fortunate throughout the year.
The Angel Tree – The Angel Tree stands on the Bridge (the bridge connecting the Christian Education Building and the Sanctuary on the main floor of the Church) each Advent season. Along with the tree are lists of gifts needed by a number of Centre County agencies, such as shelters, nursing homes and day care centers. This is an opportunity for families and individuals of all ages to share with those in need and to help support agencies which serve youth, the elderly, the homeless, and the medically uninsured, and to provide a gift for someone who might not otherwise receive one at Christmas time. In 2004, 779 Angel Tree requests were made and 783 gifts were returned.
Adopt-A-Night -- The third Friday of every month 2-3 volunteers are needed to "adopt a night" at Centre House, one of the local shelters that SCPC supports. Many have experienced the rewards of spending four hours, 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. with people staying at Centre House. Volunteers bring the ingredients for a dinner and prepare the meal with two of the Centre House residents, then sit and share the meal with all the residents. Another group of residents cleans up while you share the rest of the time in fellowship conversing with the residents. Please consider gathering a few folks together to participate in this meaningful outreach experience.

Other Mission Opportunities – Various other mission opportunities present themselves throughout the year. You are encouraged to read and learn more about them as they are presented in the Sunday Bulletins and the monthly PresbyPost.
