Presbyterian Women

Our purpose:  Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves:
to nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study
to support the mission of the church worldwide
to work for justice and peace
to build an inclusive, caring community of women that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (USA) and witnesses to the promise of God’s kingdom

All women of the church are welcome and invited to join PW in mission, Bible study and fellowship.  Some women belong to Circles:  Ruth Circle meets the third Monday at 12:30 pm; Esther Circle meets the third Monday at 1:00 pm; Rebecca Circle meets the third Tuesday at 9:30 am; Bible Study Circle meets the third Thursday at 1:00 pm; and GIFT (Growing In Fellowship Together -- a book/video discussion group) meets every other Friday at 12:15 pm

Help is always needed with special events including the Fall and Spring Gatherings, and the Strawberry Social.  Funeral receptions and lunches are served as needed and the Christmas Candlelight Choir is provided with a supper between services.  A number of women participate in the annual PW-led Worship Service.  Everyone is welcomed needed for these events.

PW co-sponsors some mission projects with the Mission Ministry Unit, and also regularly support local as well as worldwide missions through financial contributions to General Assembly.  Birthday Offering, Thank Offering and Least Coin Offering support mission projects including medical which benefit women and children worldwide.  In addition, PW contributes to a yearly Synod mission project.  The 2005 project was the Haitian Housing initiative which will fund materials for Haitians to build houses with leadership from our missionaries in Haiti.  The proposal for this project originated with State College PW.  The Synod project for 2006 will be Camp Krislund.

Presbyterian Women is connectional just as the Presbyterian Church is a connectional church.  On the national level, PW publishes “Horizons,” a magazine which shares how Christian women worldwide are living out their faith.  “Horizons” also publishes a yearly Bible Study issue.

Any special interest group of Presbyterian women can organize as part of the connectional PW and can send representatives to the Coordinating Team meetings to help guide, lead, and coordinate women’s activities in this church.

Synod Presbyterian Women Palm Project

This is a new mission opportunity for the development of palm plantations in Congo.  Destruction of agricultural capabilities has forced Congo, once the largest producer of palm oil, to now import cooking oil for domestic use. With funding from the PW Palm Project, women's groups and hospitals of the Presbyterian community of Congo will be able to plant new varieties of Costa Rican palms.  These new varieties of palms grow low to the ground, allowing women to participate in the planting, maintenance, and harvest.  Also these new varieties will produce 3 to 6 times more oil per hectare of 150 trees.  Most importantly, one $20,000 investment from PW will fund 80 hectares of palms that will generate $200,000 per year for 30 years to subsidize educational programs, hospitals, and clinics.  A great return from an income-generating project.  A small plantation of 450 palms planted at a high school will cover the tuition of 60 girls.  A gift of $20 to the Palm Project will purchase about 10 new plants.
