Advent 2020 ~ Awaken to Joy!
Advent is a very important time in the church year, as we prepare our hearts for the coming of our savior, born in Bethlehem long ago and promised to return to us in glory. This year, our celebration of Advent and Christmas will be different from years past, but we will lift up the joy of the season and encourage all to welcome Christ into our lives and world.
Our theme for Advent this year will be “Awaken to Joy!” as Christ summons us to awaken to joy, hope, peace, and love. The Apostle Paul writes, “You know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near.” We have been through many days of darkness, but the light of our savior shines for us. He is coming near!

Advent Small Group Offerings
Our meaning of Joy small group with Peggy Lindsey is already full! We are so excited that so many of you are interested in joining a small group during this season, but unfortunately we do need to limit the number of participants in that group so that everyone involved can contribute in discussion and connect more deeply. If you did not get a chance to sign up for that group, but would still be interested in an Advent small group, reach out to Allison and we will work with spiritual Life to explore other group opportunities for this season.
Advent Devotionals ~ Awaken ~ "Speak Lord, your servant is listening.” 1 Samuel 3: 10
Advent is a time of anticipation, but so often we are not quite sure how God will show up. So we must be ready for anything! We hope to be as Samuel, hearing God calling to us in the night, responding with ears open to how God is leading each of us. To ready ourselves to hear God’s nudgings we can reflect together on the noticings of God we have experienced before. We will share stories of Aha! moments and new beginnings as well as processing feelings of dread or being held back. We invite you to participate in our daily Advent devotional reflections this season, starting November 29th. You can do so in different ways, as a contributor, writing a reflection to share with others, or receiving and connecting through reading the reflections of others.
Please email Allison to make sure you’re on the list or if you have any questions.
The Angel Tree
As we all know, 2020 and the Covid-19 virus have brought many changes in the ways we as a church community do things. That includes the annual Angel Tree gifting. The program is being adapted to new requirements and considerations to enable all of us to be as safe and healthy as possible. As always, our gifts will support several different social service agencies in the community and county, including the Youth Service Bureau, Centre Safe, Windy Hill, Office of Aging, Centre Volunteers in Medicine, Park Forest Preschool and more.
Under current plans, there will be three ways to support the Angel Tree program this year:
Donations may be made until December 11. Any donations received after the December 11 deadline will go toward the cost of hotel rooms for Out of the Cold guests.
With a financial contribution, either gift cards or specific requested items will be purchased by the committee and delivered to the agencies. In the second option, items may also be purchased by the giver and delivered to the church for distribution. Gift suggestions are being requested from the agencies on behalf of those people for whom they provide care.
Please contact either Carrie Miller (814-441-5577) or Sharon Manno (814-466-6098) with your questions.
In this season of thankfulness, let us share our many blessings.
FISH (Fellowship In Senior High) Christmas Cookie-Bake 2020:
Smaller, Simpler but Just As Delicious
The FISH Cookie Bake is a decades old tradition to help cover Mission Trip costs and fill your Christmas cookie needs. It is still happening BUT in 2020 with COVID concerns, we must change our usual plan.
Instead of the usual menu of cookie types, we will be selling Variety Grab Bags of yummy cookies! FISH member families will be baking their best cookie/dessert to be placed in variety packs of a dozen and sold starting Sunday, December 13 to support the FISH program. Suggested Donation is $8 a dozen.
No Pre-Orders are being taken this year.
Drive Through Sales: Sunday, December 13, beginning at 11:00 am we will be selling in the church parking lot. Feel free to drive through and pick up all you need.
Scheduled Pickup: After December13 we ask that you call the church to arrange a time to pick up any cookies still available.
Christmas Candlelight Service on YouTube
Because we cannot gather for this highly anticipated annual event this year, the Candlelight Service will be a recorded service. There will be virtual Choir pieces, special guests, and traditional Christmas hymns and carols for us all to sing.
You can view the service on our YouTube channel (State College Presbyterian). The service will be available in mid-December.
Christmas Story Experience!
Plans are underway for a “Christmas Story Experience” on the evenings of December 23 and 24. Family groups (those living within the same household) can sign up to reserve a time slot to walk through the experience, hear the Christmas story and see performers acting out the scenes in separate rooms, followed by music and candles in the sanctuary. Scripture readings will accompany each stop. It will be a meaningful and memorable evening as we celebrate the birth of the Messiah in a new way, adapted to the reality of pandemic restrictions.
We’re excited to bring you this live experience! Watch for more details to come with a sign-up genius to reserve your time slot. Times will be available for family groups from 5:00 – 6:45 pm (at 5 minute intervals) on the evenings of December 23 and Christmas Eve.
You won’t want to miss it – plan to walk through the story with us with this unique “Christmas Story Experience” at SCPC!

Choose "other gifts" and designate "Christmas Day Dinner" in the notes section. Thank you for your support!

Out of the Cold
Due to Covid-19 safety concerns and our commitment to the Stay and Play Preschool, SCPC will not be able to host the “Out Of The Cold Emergency Shelter” in our building this holiday season as we have the last 8+ years. Instead, we plan offer support and shelter in a different way.
Through our Angel Tree program we will be asking for room sponsorships equaling the cost of a one night hotel stay for an individual (Exact price TBA). We will also be asking individuals to provide nightly meals to be delivered to the guests. We are working closely with OOTC case workers on details for how best to do this. Keep an eye out or contact the church office for details soon.
Jesus said that “What you do for the least of these, my brethren, you do for me” which is why we would prefer to have the OOTC guests in our building, in close community with us. Unfortunately, the pandemic forces us to consider how distance can be an act of love as well. For this reason, we hope you can understand these changes and will support our homeless friends in a different way this year.
