Sharing in the Lord’s Supper

Communion in Presbyterian Church, also known as the Lord’s Supper, is one of the two sacraments we celebrate as Presbyterians, joining with Christians everywhere in this sacred tradition. When we share the bread and cup, we celebrate Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and His resurrection for our salvation. Through communion, we remember Christ’s love, express our gratitude, and strengthen our bond as a Christian community gathered in faith.

Open Communion — All Are Welcome

At State College Presbyterian Church, we practice open communion. Everyone who has been baptized—regardless of denomination—is invited to participate. Baptized children may join if their parents feel they are ready and have explained the meaning of communion. Visitors are warmly welcomed to share in the sacrament with us.

How Communion Is Served

Communion at SCPC may be served in one of two ways:

1. By Intinction (Coming Forward)

When invited by the ushers, worshippers come forward row by row using the side aisles.

Take a piece of bread (now gluten-free rice crackers).

Dip it into the chalice of grape juice.

Eat and return to your seat using the center aisle.

If you prefer to remain seated, an Elder will bring the elements to you.

2. In the Pews (Tray Service)

Elders pass the bread first, then the cup.

Please hold each element until everyone has been served so that we may partake together—a symbol of our unity in Christ.

Cup-holders are provided on the back of the pew in front of you.

Communion at Home Presbyterian

When communion is celebrated during our live-stream worship, you are invited to participate from home.

Before the service begins, prepare your own communion elements (bread and wine).

Follow along with the service and share in the sacrament at the same time as the congregation.

Even though we may be in different places, we are one body in Christ, joined in spirit as we eat and drink together.

Who Leads the Presbyterian Communion

A minister of Word and Sacrament presides over communion, assisted by our ordained elders and deacons.

The Worship Ministry Unit oversees the preparation of the elements.

Elders serve on a rotation to assist with distribution.

An elder or member of the congregation may also assist at baptisms.

Our elders help guide the mission, worship, and life of the church—ensuring that our celebration of the sacraments honors Christ and nurtures our faith community.
