Lent 2021

Lent is a season of reflection and preparation before the celebration of Easter. By observing the 40 days of Lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ's sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days.

Lenten Devotionals
Our theme for Lent this year is “A Faith That Asks Questions.” Join us as we reflect and ask ALL the questions together through our Lenten devotionals. Why is it important to our faith to ask questions? How can someone be born again? Who is my neighbor?  What does it mean to forgive when I don’t feel like it? How am I being called to bring more of my gifts? What becomes possible when I can’t resort to my usual way of doing things?  How can I learn from others so I might grow to see my faith differently? What makes my faith come alive? How do I remove the plank from my eye? What am I waiting for? We won’t find all the answers, but we hope journeying with our questions will draw us closer to each other and our hope in Christ. Share a question, reflect on why that question informs or challenges your faith, and offer a prayer or piece of scripture. Submit your reflections to Mary Jane Kistler (mkistler1983@gmail.com) or Allison Maus (allisonscpc@gmail.com)

Adult Education:  “Questions Jesus Asks" ~
led by Dean Lindsey

Our theme in the season of Lent is “A Faith that Asks Questions.”  Questions are a good thing.  They open doors; they lead to deeper understanding.  Through the season of Lent, members of the congregation will be encouraged to think about our questions to or about God and Jesus and about the life of faith.  Additionally, in a two part Adult Ed series, Dean Lindsey will be taking a look at the questions Jesus himself asks.  There are over 307 of them in the gospels.  We won’t be looking at them all, but we’ll try to focus on some very important ones!

Here is our schedule as we explore “Questions Jesus Asks” ~ Zoom links will be published on the homepage and in the Weekly Update and Worship emails:

  • Part 1 “Questions Jesus Asks:  Identity and Faith”
Sunday, March 21, 11.00 am via Zoom
  • *Part 2 “Questions Jesus Asks:  Pointing to the Cross”
NOTE DATE:  Wednesday, March 24, 7:00 pm via Zoom
~ Come join Pastor Dean for a special edition of Adult Ed that comes on a weekday! We will  continue our discussion on some of the important questions about faith Jesus himself asks.

Resurrection Garden Kits - Lenten Family Activity
Resurrection Garden Kits will be available soon during the week after Ash Wednesday - along with a devotion booklet for families with children.

Our Resurrection Garden Kits were inspired by a craft Leslie Stafford did a few years ago for her Sunday School class.  Even Ms. Deannine has a little garden in her office.  When contacted this past month about the idea of craft kits, Leslie and the whole Stafford family all jumped in to help come up with instructions and put together the kits for our families to enjoy!  Many thanks to Gracie, Jakob, Chad & Leslie for this wonderful gift!

And also thank you to Patt Campolongo for helping to add the last few items to the kit bags and setting them out for pick up!

Families should have received an email with instructions on getting the kits.  If there are extras, they will be located at the Parking Lot entrance to the church - feel free to pick one up!

Please join us for our annual FISH-led Ash Wednesday service. This year we will be gathering on Zoom as FISH shares music, prayer, meditations, ashes and more. All to help us prepare for the Lenten season. If able, please prepare your own ashes at home by mixing a little oil and fine ash in a small container. If you do not have access to ashes, that is ok. The Spirit will fill in where we need.

A Good Friday Walk-Through Experience (Inspired by The Stations Of The Cross) ~ Friday, April 2
This year, in addition to a regular service we will be offering a “Good Friday Walk-Through Experience” inspired by the work of Rev. Emily Scott (found here).  From 10:00 am – 8:00 pm you are invited to walk through different areas of the church (with ‘Covid-19 Safe distancing), each focusing on part of the Crucifixion story using readings, activities and contemporary images of struggle and pain to help us contemplate and experience the story of Jesus’ saving work in our modern world and lives.

Maundy Thursday Service  ~ Thursday, April 1
This Holy Week service will take place April 1 at 7:00 pm via zoom.  This service will draw us together to reflect on the vulnerable care Jesus models before his arrest, as we pray, reflect, and share. We will also have the opportunity to share communion so please have a bit of bread and juice or wine ready so we make partake in the holy meal together.

Good Friday Service of Music and Word ~ Friday, April 2
Good Friday is one of the most dramatic accounts in the Gospels.  Musicians have long used the dramatic liturgy of Good Friday to create beautiful music that reflects the love and passion of the day.  This brief service will match music and the word of the Passion narrative according to John to create a sacred time for reflection on the powerful words and music of Good Friday.  It will be available on YouTube.

Easter Sunday Worship ~ Sunday, April 4
We are planning an Easter Sunrise Service at 7:00 am and an outdoor service at 10:00 am at Windswept Farm.  Watch for more details to come.
A recorded service will also be available on YouTube.
