Tending the Soil of our Hearts: A Spiritual Life Mini Retreat
At the end of the growing season, farmers and gardeners take time to test their soil before the freeze sets in. This helps them know what might grow there next season. In sharing the Parable of the Sower, Jesus tells us that God’s grace is abundant, yet sometimes the soil is unprepared to receive it. As we enter into the Fall season, we too are invited to tend to the soil of our hearts to best receive the love God desires to plant there.

Join us for an afternoon as we reflect and share on the Parable of the Sower. There will be time for solitude, small group discussion, and a shared community meal provided by RE Farm Cafe.

When: Sunday, September 24, 3-6:30 pm
Where: RE Farm Cafe at Windswept (1000 Fillmore Road State College, PA 16803)
Suggested Donation: $20-40/person (to help cover meal and program costs)

REGISTRATION IS CLOSED

Hosted by the Spiritual Life Unit of SCPC.  All are welcome.
The Details...

Location
Our retreat will be held at RE Farm Cafe at Windswept Farm. We have chosen this beautiful venue for its explorable space and because of our thematic look at soil. We’re excited to share a meal from the crops grown here at the farm and prepared on site! To learn more about RE Farm Cafe, find their website here.
or directions to RE Farm Cafe, click here.

What to Bring
  • Warm clothing -- Our event will be held partially outdoors as we hope to walk around the farm a bit. We ask that you dress accordingly for cool, Fall weather. We recommend lots of layers. In the case of severe weather, our event will be moved inside.
  • Good walking shoes -- RE Farm Cafe at Windswept Farm is very accessible, but there is uneven ground. We advise wearing shoes that will keep you comfortable.
  • Journal and Pen -- If you are someone who processes through writing it’s a good idea to bring these with you.

Tentative Itinerary
  • 3:00 pm- Arrive at RE Farm Cafe; check-in – Introduction to retreat
  • 3:15 pm- Worship + A short reflection – We’ll center and remind ourselves why we’ve gathered and start exploring what scripture offers us in this season. We’ll take a short walk around the farm and hear from an expert about the role soil plays in the success of crops and more.
  • 3:45 pm- Individual reflection –Take time to yourself to wander the farm or sit and journal. The time is yours
  • 4:15 pm-Small Group connection – Wisdom gathering and further reflection in casual small groups. We want to make sure we are intentional about connecting and sharing our stories so we may hold each other up as we continue together in faith.
  • 5:30 pm- Closing circle
  • 5:45 pm- Dinner – Our shared meal will be catered by RE Farm Cafe; please indicate any allergies on your registration so we can meet these needs.

Fall Men’s Retreat: The Return of the Prodigal Son
The Prodigal Son is one of Jesus’s most important parables, demonstrating God’s unconditional love and acceptance for the sinner.  Henri Nouwen’s book the Return of the Prodigal Son, is an in depth, personal meditation of each of the three central characters;  the father, the elder son as well as the younger son..  The Men’s Group and the Spiritual Life Unit are inviting men to a weekend retreat, where we take a deeper look at these three main characters and how they serve as  archetypes that we all embody at some point in our life.
The retreat will be from Friday evening October 6 through Sunday morning October 8 at Krislund Camp.  There will be time for individual silent reflection, journaling as well as some group discussion.  We will also be doing a small service project on Saturday morning and spending time in nature.   The suggested donation will be $100 and includes meals.  To register contact the church office by 9/24/23.  For any questions, see Rob Huffard or Reed Dressler.

“The story of the prodigal son is the story of a God who goes searching for me and who doesn’t rest until he has found me.”
― Henri J.M. Nouwen, The Return of the Prodigal Son: A Story of Homecoming
