FISH During Covid-19
After a whole summer’s worth of prayer and discernment, FISH leaders felt God’s invitation to focus on “the core” of what FISH is called to be: “A space for high school youth to experience the unconditional love of God through radically inclusive fellowship with each other, caring adults and an authentic community of faith…”. With this in mind, three plans were created (A, B & C) with “plan A” being the core that can happen no matter what. Plan “B” and “C” are what FISH will look like as distancing restrictions lessen and in person options increase. Why? Because just as Romans 8 tells us “neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God” it is also true of God’s calling for us. Plan A will always happen, B and C just add bonus possibilities along the way.
Snap shot of each plan:
Plan A: Focusing on “the core”, FISH will be exclusively online if schools cancel all in person instruction due to virus concerns.
When: 6:30-8:00 pm on Wednesdays.
Where: Online through Zoom
What: We begin with games and music before digitally moving to the small groups we know and love and ending the night by digitally gathering again for “closing circle” where love and prayers are shared.
Plan B: If SCASD has in person instruction but social distancing restrictions remain, FISH will have both in person and digital options.
When: 6:30 – 8:30 pm on Wednesdays.
Where: At SCPC in assigned small group rooms OR online through zoom.
What: Skipping dinner and other large group gatherings, FISH members will meet in person by going directly to their small group room where masks, tables, snacks and a screen with Zoom connected will be waiting. This allows those unable to attend in person to participate digitally as well as connect small groups to each other for virtual large group activities to start and end the night.
Plan C: When a vaccine becomes widely available and distancing precautions are lifted, this option returns us to the eating, singing, hugging, sharing, praying, playing FISH we remember.
Dates to Remember:
September 2, 6:30-8:00 pm: FISH Ice Cream & Registration Kickoff
September 9, 6:30-8:30 pm: First FISH Wednesday!
September 19-20: Fall Retreat - either virtually via Zoom or at a local park during daytime hours
When FISH Winds Down ...
June brings a flurry of activity to finish our program year. On the first Sunday in June, FISH leads worship. We sing, share scripture, share our stories, lead prayer, offer announcements and celebrate with the congregation. It is something that we all look forward to doing together. And later in June, FISH usually heads out to Assateague Island (national seashore on the coast of Maryland) for our end of the year retreat. We love finishing our year this way and welcome your prayers of shared celebration.
We'll have to see whether Summer 2021 allows this to happen!
