Sunday Morning Programs
NEW PLANS for Fall 2021
Sunday School BEGINS on October 10th for all ages!
Pre School, Elementary, Youth and Adults will all have a class!
As you can imagine, it has not been easy to even attempt this! We are having issues securing enough volunteers and also getting childcare workers at the moment, so thanks for being with us.
Also, due to Covid, we have limitations on who is available and/or feels comfortable to teach during this pandemic. Therefore, the Education Ministry Unit has approved a new plan for the FALL for our Pre School and Elementary.
We will offer two multi-age Sunday School classes... if we have enough people to teach each week.
The 3's, 4's, and Kindergarten age will combine in Room 209 with two teachers and there will be an air purifier in there.
The 1st - 5th Graders will combine in Room 210 with two teachers. It is our largest room and has an air purifier.
We will keep doors open, and everyone must wear a mask.
Since we will not be serving snacks, again due to Covid/safety, our Sunday School classes will be from 10:15ish - 11am. This gives time for children and youth to go get something at the coffee hour and to eat it there. We are not bringing snacks to rooms.
The important thing to note is this: Parents will have to pick up their children after Creative Movement & Music AND Children & Worship classes, go to coffee hour, and then bring them to Sunday School. While it's not perfect plan, it is the only one we see working for the time being.
Middle School youth will meet in Fireside Room, and the High School youth will meet in the Tower Room, unless they outgrow that spot. While we have 2 permanent teachers for each of the youth classes, we could use more. Please speak up to any of them or to me if you are willing. They have curriculum provided.
The Pre School and Elementary Classes will be taught by rotating volunteers for the Fall and so I have a sign up linked to the email, but listed in the flyer version you will get in the mail. The link will be on our website as well. As you can guess, we could really use your help in having enough volunteers to even have Sunday School ! Curriculum is provided and will be mailed out to folks in advance. A copy will be in the children's rooms as well.
We are hoping to get volunteer teachers on a weekly basis, and have created a SIGN UP to do that! If you are willing to lead, and have taught at our church before, please sign up! If you are new, and want to sign up, give Deannine Shipman a call at church first so you know what the safety procedures are!
Here is the link to sign up: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0448a5af29aa8-fall
Many thanks for your support and understanding,
Deannine Shipman, Director of Education and Program
Deannine will send a weekly email with lessons and activities for parents who are not choosing to come back in person yet. If you are not getting those emails, please let the church office know! Sometimes this will be ideas for family discussion, readings, and devotions, while other times there might be some videos (You Tube) ! We hope that some of our families might be willing to help make some of these videos and share them!
Middle School and High School youth are welcome to attend a Youth Sunday School for their age group, and details will follow soon on where that location will be!
LOGOS is planning an IN PERSON program this Fall. Details about this program are available on our Mid-Week ministries pages for Children and Youth. Go to our Mid-Week Ministries for Children and Youth pages to see the details.
FISH, our Sr. High group, has also started up with very different plans, but hoping to keep our youth connected in some way! See the FISH pages for details.
So as you can see, we have been working, and we are trying hard to adapt in these difficult times.
Our NORMAL Programs ~
The State College Presbyterian Church wants to partner with parents to nurture your child's faith! At SCPC we have many programs for children -- for preschool ages on up. Click on the sub-menus to the right to learn more about opportunities for children. If you don't see what you are looking for, just ask! (contact Deannine Shipman, Director of Education and Program, 814-238-2422). Our mid-week ministries are listed on additional pages.
Sunday School Classes
Each Sunday we offer classes for Preschoolers through High School students. We are presently using the PCUSA curriculum "Growing in Grace & Gratitude" with Pre Schoolers, and for our children up through Grade 5. Children, youth, and teachers are always on a faith adventure as they learn about the Bible and our faith traditions in the Presbyterian Church. Together they will read Bible stories based on Scripture that reveal God's grace.
For more information on our curriculum: growinggracegratitude.org
Our middle school and high school students study varied topics of faith issues, the Bible, and the Presbyterian Church. They are also using PCUSA curriculum for youth which is called Follow Me. This curriculum is centered around Biblical practices for Faithful Living.
Children/Youth must be the age of the class listed by September1st (or in that grade) to be in that class. Any questions or concerns may be addressed to Patt Campolongo (SS Superintendent), or to Deannine Shipman (Director of Education and Program).
Listed below are the NORMAL rooms for all of our children and youth classes. ALL are WELCOME! Classes may be broadly graded this fall because of lower attendance do to COVID. We will update as we know more.
Most of the Sunday School Classes start at 10:00 am and end at 11:00 am.
Children who go to a program such as Creative Movement and Music, or Children and Worship (see below) are taken directly to their Sunday School classes by the teachers. Children in 3rd Grade and older should get to their classes right after worship/by 10:15 am.
When we resume our two service worship schedule with the first service at 9:00 am, children ages 3 and up through older Elementary children are welcome to come forward for the children’s message. Then children, 2nd graders and below, are invited to join in their special programs. Children who go to a program such as Creative Movement and Music, or Children and Worship are taken directly to their Sunday School classes by the teachers. Children in 3rd grade and older should leave worship when it is over, and go directly to their classes. In 2nd/3rd Grade, the snack is served first during the reading of the lesson, so we encourage those children to go directly to class!
Parents are to stay in the building during Sunday School and are welcome to attend Adult Education Classes at 10:15 am or visit in the Social Hall.
Special Programs for Children ages 3-5 (Creative Movement and Music ) and 1st and 2nd grade (Children in Worship) are available following the Children's Message during the worship service.
Any questions or concerns may be addressed to Patt Campolongo (Sunday School Superintendent), or to Deannine Shipman (Director of Education and Program - 238-2422).
Creative Movement and Music
Beginning on September 12, our pre-school aged children (ages 3 - 5) are invited to join with music leaders, Ellen Rom, Kate Woodruff, and Elizabeth Richardson in Westminster Hall for a time of music, movement, and fun! This program begins following the Children’s Message during the worship service. This fall it will also occur during the 10:00 am worship service through October 3rd. On October 10th, when we go back to two services with the education hour in between, then this program will be during the 9:00 am service.
At the conclusion of this program when it happens during the 9am service, the children are escorted by their Sunday School teachers to their classrooms. This program is designed for children who are already 3 years old by September 1st of each year. Children turning 3 years old during the school year should wait until next Fall to join Creative Movement and Music and Sunday School. At the conclusion of the 10am service, we will invite parents to pick their children up before going to our special coffee hour.
(Note: Our Toddler Room is designed for ages 2 and 3.)
Children and Worship Class - Uses Godly Play curriculum
Our Children & Worship program begins on September 12 with leaders, Jenny Van Hook, Jody Barth, Linda Edvar, and Libby Snyder. This program is for 1st and 2nd graders (and 3rd Graders for 2021/22) who choose not to stay in the worship service. They meet downstairs in room 11 following the Children’s Message during the 9:00 am/10:00 am worship service. At the conclusion of this program, the children are escorted by their Sunday School teachers to their Sunday School classrooms when it occurs during the 9:00 am service.
