Strengthening Ministry Connections in a New Year
In 2018, our congregation made a big step forward in our  ministry to college students and young adults by bringing Allison Maus to our church.  Allison had just graduated from Princeton Seminary and had completed all of the necessary steps towards ordination.  We felt so blessed that God had led us to a person uniquely qualified for the work of campus ministry who could also add greatly to our congregational worship and our Spiritual Life programs.  We were able to enter into a three year covenant with Allison which will conclude at the end of the current academic year.

We are all grateful for Allison’s ministry among us, and that is why the Session has been discussing ways that we can continue this fruitful relationship by creating an Associate Pastor position that Allison would fill.

As these conversations have progressed through the Summer and Fall, several important doors have opened. First of all, we were approved to receive help under a special program of the Board of Pensions for newly ordained persons in new ministry positions. This will greatly reduce the amount we must pay for Allison’s health and pension benefits. Still, we will have to increase her compensation to meet Presbytery’s minimums for an ordained person. Here again, we have wonderful news. A group of church members has already committed additional support to make up the difference between Allison’s current salary and what Presbytery requires.

That is why the Session now feels comfortable in recommending to the congregation the formation of an Associate Pastor Nominating Committee to call Allison as an Associate Pastor for Campus, Young Adult, and Spiritual Life ministry for the designated term of three years, beginning in May of 2021. This recommendation will be brought forward at the annual congregational meeting on January 24.

There are great challenges for our ministries right now, and for campus ministry in particular.  The pandemic has made radical changes to the lives of students and how our church can relate to them.  However, the pandemic will not continue forever, and now we have a great opportunity to prepare, with God’s help, for what happens next!  Please continue to pray for our common work and plan on joining the meeting on Sunday, January 24.
