Past Mission Projects
![]() Houston Flood Relief
Members of SCPC and our college ministry, were in Houston and worked with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance over spring break 2018 to offer relief to those still hoping for help after Hurricane Harvey. While in Houston, we rehabbed homes that were flooded with 2-4 feet of water and gutted. Our work was primarily interior - insulating, dry-walling, floors and doors, cabinets and vanities, painting and trimming. |

Stormbreak Project Slideshow -- Click to watch! Volunteers Renovate Stormbreak on Channel WTAJ TV 150+ church members and friends helped to transform the Stormbreak Shelter for teenage girls from a worn residential shelter to a warm and inviting residence for about 6-9 girls - a $25,000 project that was funded by SCPC's faith fund. It was a full make-over: new flooring was installed, fresh paint was put on the walls, new plates and silverware adorned the dining table, light fixtures were updated, the staircase hand rails were refurbished, the kitchen and windows were cleaned, and new furniture was delivered. Children from the LOGOS program made decorate art work for the girl's room and other volunteers sewed curtains at The Makery (thank you Amy Frank!), and others provided snacks to the workers. It was truly a labor of love. Everyone came back to celebrate the success with a luncheon at the church on Saturday afternoon. Thanks to Sharon Ambrose, and Phil Spangler who coordinated the countless details for the project and Mike Ozaki who led up the mission team. |
Haiti Travel Team
A Haiti Travel Team traveled to Haiti over the Thanksgiving holiday in 2012. One of the intentions they held as they left home was to explore whether we, as a congregation, should rekindle our relationship and close connection to CODEP, which is supported by the Haiti Fund, Inc. They came home with a strong feeling of "YES!" and, it would be an honor to find ways to support the project. It is truly doing good and sustainable work in Haiti, a place of great struggle and great potential. The struggle comes from many fronts (political, cultural, economic, etc.) and some of the great potential is seated in the land itself. CODEP is doing wonderful things to leverage the advantages the mountain areas can offer.
Members of the 2012 team were: Miranda Auhl (PSU Student/WPF Board Member), Kathryn Gaylord-Miles (young adult member of SCPC), Kim Hunkizer (SCPC Mission Associate, Alex Hunziker (Middle Schooler), Anna Hunziker (middle Schooler), Karen Mastin (SCPC Mission Ministry Unit member and Haiti Fund, Inc/CODEP veteran), Mike McQueary (SCPC member), Emily Reichard (SCPC/FISH High School senior), Ken Raney (member of Pine Grove Mills Presbyterian Church), Phil Tometich (SCPC member and Haiti Fund, Inc/CODEP veteran, Seamus Wagner (FISH High School senior), Beth Zong (member of McVeytown Presbyterian Church and Haiti veteran).
Living Waters for the WorldIn August 2010 eight of our church members traveled to the Mexican town of Pencuyut in the Yucatan. There they finished the installation of a water purification system to provide a reliable source of clean water. As part of their mission they also educated community members in the use and maintenance of the system. In August 2011 two of the team members made a trip back to check on the project.
